“I have always run, swam and cycled for fitness but 2 years ago, after my third herniated disc, a physiotherapist recommended Pilates as a way to strength my core and lower back. I had never exercised in a “gym like” setting before and I remember being so self-conscious in the first class, as I fumbled with equipment and struggled through the exercises.

To be honest, I didn’t take to Pilates immediately as I found it so sedentary, but I persevered as I had heard so much about the benefits. I started with 2 classes a week and it wasn’t long before I began to see the benefits for myself. My posture improved (I claim I have grown an inch) and my core strength began to develop. After increasing the number of classes to 3 a week I noticed my muscles became leaner and more defined. It took more than 6 months before I felt confident enough to try a Level 2 class and by then I was hooked, trying to get to Pilates as often as I could. Now I book classes around my schedule and in any week will attend Level 1, 2, and 3 classes.

I find the instructors are always willing to adapt the exercises so I always feel like I’m getting a whole body workout at any level. Thanks to Pilates I have no more back problems, and I am leaner and more toned. And there have been unforeseen benefits too. I recently did a triathlon and finished feeling the best I ever had with no aching muscles or stiffness. Yoga vs PIlates

What is the difference between yoga and pilates?

If you’ve ever asked this question, you are not alone. This is a question many of our clients us. Whilst some of the exercise motions may look the same, there are key differences between these two activities.

Yoga stems from a more philosophical root, focusing on the union of both body and mind. The elements of energy, relaxation, and detoxification are of a higher priority. That’s why you would hear a lot about meditative exercises, as well as breathing techniques. 

Pilates meanwhile, stems from a more practical outlook. It is focused on the fitness and physical well-being of the practitioner. More priority is therefore placed on the execution of different range of motion. Specialised pilates machines are also often used in these exercises. The end goal is to curate a better and healthier body for the individual.

If this is your first time, fear not. Whilst it might seem intimidating, there’s nothing to worry about at all. With a MyFitnessComrade pilates instructor training you, you will be in good hands.

Firstly, we’ll put you through a basic assessment given to all newcomers. This helps establish your current fitness level, helping us understand your desired training outcomes. We believe that customised training plans are needed to reach each individuals’ goals. That is why you’ll seldom find two individuals having the exact workout plan. 

Clients who experience chronic neck, shoulder, or back problems would be further encouraged to seek private one-on-one sessions. These sessions will be more focused on the rehabilitation from these injuries.

 

Curated Lesson Plan

Once your pilates instructor has conducted the basic assessment, the next step would be putting together a customised training plan.

They will cater specifically to concerns that you might have, whilst building the lesson in a way that helps reach your desired outcome. As such, the total number of lessons might differ for each individual. Some simply requires a quick tweak in their form, and so may need just four lessons. Others have been suffering from deep-rooted problems that needs to be tackled layer by layer. As such, these individuals are given the option of pursuing a long-term lesson plan. There is no pressure however. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide what kind of lessons you want for yourself. Our coach is simply there to provide you with guidance and professional opinions.

Pilates lessons can be conducted in different ways. For some, they like to be in a large group, as they enjoy the sense of togetherness of the community. For others, they prefer doing it small intimate groups, with friends and family members sharing in the session today. It doubles up as a bonding activity for these individuals.

There are also individuals who very much prefer a private lesson. They find it most conducive for learning and exercising, since the instructors will be dedicating 100% of their attention on them.
